Chapter Eighteen

Despite my assurances, the twins flanked me all the way to the mini-city. “I told you, I’m not going to tell him,” I said when I noticed they follow me to my apartment building instead of splitting off to their own.

“We’re supposed to stay with you all day,” Percy said.

“Why? I promised not to tell him.”

“You can’t tell anyone else either,” Penny said shyly.

“No one? Not even Lana?”

“Specifically, not even Lana.”

“Why not?” We’d reached my apartment door, but I didn’t open it. I wanted to break down and wallow in self-pity. I couldn’t do that with an audience.

“Again, I don’t know anything for certain, but I can make an educated guess.” Penny pulled a stray piece of grass from my hair.

“Then guess,” I said.

“Lana has been on Team Rupert and Freya for a while now. She tried to make you believe in him. I think that the head Cupids think that if you tell her, she will tell him,” Penny said.

“Tell him what?” Lana opened my apartment door from the inside. She’d been waiting in there for me all night, I’d bet.

“Nothing,” the twins said as one.

“Nothing my ass. Somebody better tell me what’s going on.” Lana’s stance was assertive and impatient, very unlike her usually mellow and chill demeanor.

“How much did you hear?” I asked.

“Enough to know that something is going on big enough that the bosses are involved, and they are making the three of you keep something from me.”

The twins and I exchanged a three-way glance.

“Tell me. If it’s about me, I deserve to know.” Lana pulled my arm, and the rest of my body followed it into the apartment.

Lana closed the door behind me. The Sprites let themselves in, however, and all four of us crowded into my small apartment. My eyes flicked reflexively to the wall where Rupert had hung my picture frame along with the picture, flowers, and apology note. Pain washed through me when I saw the gifts were where I’d left them.

“If you were here, I wish you would have at least gotten rid of that stuff.” I gestured to that side of the room without looking at it again.

“Why would I get rid of it? Rupert gave it to you. Freya, he told you he loves you. You have to believe him.”

“Told you so,” Penny sang quietly.

“Told her what?” Lana turned on the twins. “Is this what you were whispering about in the hallway? What does it have to do with me?”

“They’re assigned to me today.” I rolled my eyes. “They’re supposed to make sure I don’t tell anyone, especially you and one other person, that—”

Percy interrupted me. “Something. She can’t tell you something.”

Lana glanced at Percy, opened her mouth then thought better of it. “Okay, Cupid HQ stuff is important, I get that. If there is some big secret that for some reason they trusted y’all with, but they don’t want me to know, I get it. I really do know how important all the Destiny stuff is.”

“Good.” I exhaled.
